BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT

This Black History Month, we honor Gina Meeks, a dedicated community leader who has made it her life’s work to make Rockford a better place for all its residents. Raised in a family deeply committed to service, Gina was inspired by her father, Tommy Meeks, the founder of Rockford’s Juneteenth celebration. His legacy instilled in her the values of compassion, unity, and advocacy, values she continues to live by every day.

Gina’s professional journey reflects her dedication to the community. She has held key leadership roles, including former Membership Director at Rockford Country Club, director of neighborhood initiatives with the United Way of Rock River Valley, and current secretary for the Inner City Reconstruction Group. As Rockford's first Black woman alderwoman, Gina has become a trailblazer for both leadership and representation in our city. She is also an ambassador for the American Cancer Society and a professional vocalist with the Groove Hotel Band, showing her passion for both community and culture.

Gina is deeply committed to Rockford’s growth, advocating for affordable housing, youth development through programs like Rockford Promise, and tirelessly working to revitalize neighborhoods across the city. Her vision includes vibrant, safe communities and economic growth, where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

Through her leadership, Gina Meeks is not just shaping Rockford’s future—she is honoring its rich history and paving the way for generations to come. This Black History Month, we celebrate Gina Meeks—a powerful example of advocacy, leadership, and dedication to her community, and a reminder of the ongoing contributions of Black leaders in our city and beyond. This Black History Month we recognize HER.
